Sprout Social Message Actions

As a member of the Messaging Squad in the Engagement Zone at Sprout, I played a key role in shaping the interactive elements that all users engage with in direct messages. My contributions influenced user experience and engagement, enhancing how users connect and interact within the platform.

Bubble Action Bar

I started with a full messaging audit and facelift after users complained about a glitchy direct messaging interface. The biggest issue? Action bars were pushing valuable content off-screen, especially for users on small computers or inside Salesforce iFrames.

That’s where the bubble action bar came in—a slim, hovering action bar that saves vertical space without shoving messages out of the way. Through internal design iteration, I found the perfect placement to balance usability and content visibility. Testing across different browsers and Salesforce iFrames ensured consistency, though those small iFrames were the biggest challenge.

In the end, there wasn’t a single breakthrough—just solid iteration and testing to land on a solution that worked.

Modular Construction

The design needed to be modular to accommodate the various PM and DM interfaces across all social media platforms supported by Sprout Social. Each platform had its own rules and restrictions regarding the actions that could be taken on a message.
